I think I saw some old man and he was real good on the guitar, on the chords, and he didn't sing that good, just play something like that, and I copied some of that and put the words to it. And Blind Blake used to have something kinda in that style. He would play in that style and I thought he was a real good guitar player. Nice chords. Played finger style. - Jesse Babyface Thomas explains how he wrote Blue Goose Blues, interview in Shreveport, La., ca. 1989

I hear "that" in 2.2 with T and would lean to "that" in 2.1 as well – I think he sneaks "old" before used-to-be in 4.1 too.

Hi Chris,
I agree with "that" in 2.2, but not in 2.1, and am now hearing the "old" that precedes "used-to-be" in the first line of the other verse and have made those changes.

Hope it's not too late to post,

Scrapper Blackwell first recorded Shady Lane Blues with Leroy Carr, but would record it three more times from 1959 - 1961; I wonder if it was a favorite of his, it's certainly one of mine.

There's a gal I know, she lives on Shady Lane
There's a gal I know, she lives on Shady Lane
Lord, I love her so, but I cannots call her name

One of these mornings, I swear it won't be long
I said one of these mornings, Lord, I swear it won't be long
I'm gon' catch the fast train that's smoking, and down the road I go

Lord, when I leave this town, I'll like to take poor you
Lord, when I leave this town, I'll like to take poor you
But man I forgot what you talking about, I just is enough for two

Babe, my home ain't here, it's way out in the west
Babe, my home ain't here, it's way out in the west
You're looking for the Smoky Mountains, where the eagle builds his nest

Did you ever love a girl, a girl you hate to lose
Did you ever love a girl, a girl you hate to lose
Lord, there's nothing I can do now, I guess I have the blues

There's a gal I know, she lives on Shady Lane
There's a gal I know, she lives on Shady Lane
I love her so, but I'm scared to call her name

One of these mornings, swear it ain't gon' be so long
One of these mornings, ain't gon' be so long
Gonna catch the first train smoking, and down the road I'm gone

When I'm leaving this town, I'd like to take her too
Lord, when I leave this town, I'd like to take her too
But the man she's got, is big enough for two

Now baby, my home ain't here, I went out to the west
Now my woman ain't here, baby, it's way out in the west
Near the Smoky Mountains, where the eagle builds its nest

Did you ever love a girl, girl that hates to lose
Did you ever love a girl, girl that hates to lose
Nothing I can do now, I guess you"ll sing the blues

Spoken: Well, I could get used to this

I'm gonna take a walk, down through Shady Lane
I'm gonna take a walk, down through Shady Lane
That's alright I tell you, I may not call my name

Well don't the Moon look lonesome, shining through the trees
Baby, don't the Moon look lonesome, shining through the trees
Lord, that girl'll be lonesome, when she's leaving me

Please point out any errors

Version 1

2.3 I'm -gon- catch

3.3 He probably wanted to sing but the man, it came out a bit weird.

2nd version

2.1 swear it (won't) -ain't gon'- be so long
2.2 gon' instead of gonna
2.3 could be goin' instead of gone

3.2 -Lord- When I leave this town, (Lord,) I'd like to take her too
3.3 (he's) -is- big enough for two

4.1 (through) -to- the west

In the final line is a double "the"

Relistened and corrected the errors as I heard them, thanks
