Title: AFBF 67-68-69 Chris Strachwitz
Post by: daddystovepipe on April 13, 2016, 11:24:19 AM
Black and white footage of three AFBF.
I especially like the 69 Festival with mainly Arhoolie recording artists like Alex Moore, Juke Boy Bonner, Clifton Chenier and John Jackson.  Also Earl Hooker, a very young Carey Bell and Magic Sam.  Lotsa previously unseen footage.

This was released on a PAL DVD if you want to see it in better quality (Region 0 I believe). I got it from Amazon UK but it's here as well:
http://www.amazon.com/Legends-American-Folk-Blues-Festivals/dp/B001G55SU0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460654610&sr=8-1&keywords=legends+of+the+american+folk+blues+festival

One listing says NTSC and one says PAL but I'm pretty sure it's PAL.

This video, by the way, contains in my opinion what is by far the best performance of Skip James preserved on video -- he plays "Hard Times Killing Floor" and seems much more relaxed (and healthier) than in some of that Newport footage. And he's playing one of his very best numbers.

I understand that many consider Strachwitz a saint, but "Christ"? I dunno!

I wholeheartedly agree, I bought the DVD as soon as I read it contained the clip without having seen so much as a trailer. Completely worth it. Absolutely fantastic performance and something really special to have filmed, I don't believe there's any other film of him Hard Times Killing Floor Blues, in full and publicly available anyway.

I bought the DVD a couple of years ago, admittedly for the Little Walter footage. It was quite a culture shock to see him singing and playing. Although he was already in his downward spiral  (he died the next year).

The DVD comes with a 53 page booklet with lots of cool photos. As Chris said the picture quality is excellent (PAL, All Regions).
