Title: Paramount Tests on Ebay
Post by: btasoundsradio on July 13, 2009, 07:07:50 PM
I don't know if this has been posted yet, but I found this out from a NYtimes article about 78 collectors and Tefteller won them i think:
http://www.collectorsfrenzy.com/Default.aspx?ctl00%24SearchKey=paramount+test&SortKey=0&x=0&y=0

if the link doesn't work just go to collectorsfrenzy.com and search Paramount tests.

How great is this? It's 2009 & we get to hear unheard performances by Blake & Jefferson. God bless 78 collectors.

Are these unheard performances/takes, or test pressings of material we've heard?

I'm away from my B&GR Andrew but could someone check the matrix/issue #s provided for the pressings on Ebay against what B&GR has? I did this for the Rainey pressings & they seem to be alternate, hitherto unknown takes.

Ok, got B&GR in hand and . . . .

-The Blake tests for 'Black Dog Blues' (4362-1) with 'Buck-Town Blues' (4359-1)
[PM 12464] AND 'Dry Bone Shuffle' (4462-2) with 'One Time Blues' (4363-2) [PM 12479]are NOT new alternate takes . . . But maybe they sound better than what we already have.

-The Blind Lemon Jefferson tests for 'Black Snake Dream Blues' (4577-2) with 'Right Of Way Blues' (4515-2) [PM 12510] are NOT new alt takes . . . but, again, perhaps they sound better tham what we have. I really would have loved to hear an alt. of 'Right Of Way Blues', that's a great number.

-The Rev. Rose & Gospel Singers' 'Time' (4701-1) with 'Goodbye, I've Left the World Behind' (4702-1) [PM 12512] has an alternate take of 'Time' [B&GR's copy has the 2nd take] (unless this is a typo).

-The Ora Brown with Tiny Parham tests for 'Jinx Blues' with 'Twe Twa Twa Blues' are not alts. but 'Restless Blues' (4564-1) with 'Jailhouse Moan' (4563-2) [PM 12500] are.

-The Papa Charlie Jackson tests have one new alt. take in 'Skoodle Um Skoo' (4670-2) while 'Sheik Of Desplaines Street' is the one we already have.

-The Norfolk Jubilee Quartet tests offer no new alts.

-The Pace Jubilee Singers tracks offer no new takes.

So no new Blake or Blind Lemon . . . . too bad. I'll post the new Rainey, Jackson & etc in the B&GR ammendments thread.

Thanks for that, CF. I meant to go look it up and then promptly forgot. We'll need to check Document's Too Late series. I think there may be some takes on those discs that showed up later than the last edition of B&GR.

You're right Andrew. Is there a way of seeing those track listings on the Document website? I've tried searching for the 'Too Late' series there to poor results.

You probably have to browse the 5000 series (here's a link starting at the end http://document-records.com/series-5000.asp?offset=-1 ). Their database is not the greatest.

Even then, the title listed on the site may not indicate any useful info. The best thing is for someone who has a title to look at the discographical info on the CD sleeve. I have a few of the Too Lates, but not all.

The following are all the Too Late, Too Late volume catalogue numbers:

Vol. 1   5150
Vol. 2   5216
Vol. 3   5276
Vol. 4   5321
Vol. 5   5411
Vol. 6   5461
Vol. 7   5525
Vol. 8   5574
Vol. 9   5590
Vol. 10   5601
Vol. 11   5625
Vol. 12   5659
Vol. 13   5660

Concerning the above mentioned alternate takes, none of them seem to have been released on document CDs. There's only one take of Rev. Rose's "Time" on DOCD 5585. Papa Charlie Jackson has a couple of alternates on DOCD 5321 and DOCD 5625, but Skoodle Um Skoo is not among them. There are two different versions of Skoodle Um Skoo on PCJ complete vol.2 and vol.3, but these are different sessions. Ora Brown's two songs have been released on the Will Ezell CD (BDCD 6033).
