30's or 40's Orphium mandolin
« on: February 22, 2009, 03:39:36 PM »
Just played this extremely handsome unusually thick mahogany and spruce mandolin at first flight music here in nyc. Its going for $489. Very big sound, nice playing beautiful pearloid pickgaurd. A bargain I think. No dough me.

They also have a 1962 Gibson Lg-2 which was pretty good even with the stupid adjustable bridge which could be removed. It was around $1500.

Ah, the roving guitar reporter!  ..thanks for the latest!  I have an old 'beater' mando just like that one, they sound pretty big because of the relatively large body, compared to their kin of the day..(but they're far removed from the Gibson family tree)
Something is telling me that I remember them to be made by Kay..so, because you're reading this on the internet, it must be true.
Is First Flight a lot of vintage, or mostly new?   Regards, Tom

First flight caters to their lower east side post punk clientele and neighborhood families & their kids. Its vibe is decidedly R&R. They have some new stuff seagulls, takamines and the like and some extremely cool looking vintage electric Silvertones, Harmonys and some rare looking ,cheap at time of manufacture, solid bodies that look just cool as hell, though I know absolutely nothing 'bout no lectric gitars unerstan.
Its definitely worth checking out if you're in the nabe.

Can you go back and photograph the LG-2 without getting arrested?

Its on their website which is included in my original post. Its one of the large pickguard ones. Sounds very good but not great, but as noted it has that stupid sixties adjustable bridge. Probably much better once thats switched out.

That's all well and good, but I rather liked the idea of your skulking around guitar shops taking surreptitious photographs for subsequent enjoyment by fans of guitar porn.  >:D

it would be impossible to be surreptitious in a place that size.  My idea is that if I see something cool that I'd consider buying if I had the dough, I'd just assume pass along the info to fellow weenies  in hopes of finding a good home for the instrument. Besides I know what we ol' blues guys like more or less.
