It was always political?
Sam Charters: We were all committed in one way or another. How many demonstrations did we do to get Pete Seeger on TV? It was all part of the view that America should change. We didn?t sing ?On Top of Old Smoky? because it was a great song, we sang it because we wanted change. From Bruce Langhorn regarding the early Greenwich Village Folk scene: ?It was one eclectic movement that included a fabulously diverse group of individuals. Some of us just loved to play and sing the music, some of us were into poetry, some of us were into the historical and cultural background of the music, some of us were into the current and historical political implications and applications of the music, some of us were into sex, drugs and alcohol, but everyone was a little bit into everything.? * * * Updated * * *

Hi Lyle - I should have phrased that better, but I was using "clam" without the 'i' in the sense of mistake on the guitar. Before demonstrating Rev. Gary Davis's 'The Great Change in Me' in a class at the Port Townsend workshop, Ari had described a certain very tricky part of the song as "the pinnacle", where Gary Davis is singing over a fast series of partial chords. A friend had given this spot in the song the name. It might have been Nick Perls, but I would have to doublecheck. Ari liked it, so it stuck. When he then played the song himself in the class and got to "the pinnacle", he flubbed something -- barely -- and said in his very dry way, while still blazing through the song, "I just blew the pinnacle."
I was confused, because I'd never heard the term "clam" before. Thanks. I learned something new today, and I'm barely awake.
Lyle I did more for you baby, than the good lord ever done. I went downtown & bought you some hair, & the good lord never gave you none!
