Folklore is not as easy to collect as it sounds. The best source is where there are the least outside influences, and these people, being usually under-privileged, are the shyest... The Negro, in spite of his open-faced laughter, his seeming acquiescence, is particularly evasive... The Indian resists curiosity by a stony silence. The Negro offers a feather-bed resistance - Zora Neale Hurston, Mules and Men (1935)

Omnivore recordings will issue 22 previously unissued live recordings of Reverend Gary Davis from 1966.

http://omnivorerecordings.com/shop/avant-garde-recordings/

You'll find a sound sample of "Samson and Delilah" on this article.

You could pre-order from Amazon as well (but preferably via the Weenie link on the lower left corner of this page)..

Awesome! I can't wait to get a copy of this. Anything Rev Gary Davis related is a must have for me. The quality sounds great from the clip. It sounds like he is in top form from the short clip of Sampson & Delilah.

O wise ones--Anybody know if this is still coming out? Info on both Amazon and Omnivore no longer lists availability. Copyright issues, maybe?

Rather than post a separate message, I just edited the earlier one. They got right back to me:

"Hi Stuart

Slight delay in the release - hoping to have it out within a month of the original release date, but still nailing a few things down. Couple situations beyond our control have forced a delay. Shouldn?t be long.

Thanks for checking in on this!

Your friends at Omnivore Recordings"

My earlier post: I didn't see anything at their website either, so I sent them a message through their "Contact" page. I'll let you know what I hear back.

Hope this helps. --Stuart (aka the "O wise-ass one"  ;))

This seems like a must-have. The music and genius of Mr.Davis still reverberates.
