Wow - but Bessie Smith spills fire and fury in Hateful Blues on Columbia Record 14023D. Talk about hymns of hate - Bessie sure is a him-hater on this record. The way she tells what she is going to do with her "butcher" will make trifling fellows catch express trains going at 60 miles an hour. The music is full of hate too. You can almost see hate drip from the piano keys. Every note is a half-note. No quarter for anyone - Chicago defender ad, July 1924

Yes Baby Yes - Paul Geremia song?
« on: June 17, 2008, 11:12:18 AM »
HI folks,
I'm trying to remember a song I've heard Paul Geremia sing -- there's a part in it that goes "yes baby yes, no baby no".  Anyone know the source for that?

Been years since I listened to it but fairly sure a chorus from the Oscar Woods song "Don't Sell It Don't Give It Away"

BH, is right, Oscar Woods. Geremia did it waaay back on his Hard Life Rockin' Chair album, though still plays it as I recall.

You beat me to it.

I've got it on the 1969 Yazoo compilation Favorite Country Blues Piano-Guitar Duets (L-1015) which was the first microgroove reissue of the number. I'm betting it may well have been where PG heard it first too.

"Don't Sell It," along with 16 other cuts by Oscar Woods, is on the JSP "Texas Blues: Early Blues Masters from the Lone Star State" set that Johnm mentioned in his thread on Willie Reed. So here's one more reason to pick this one up.

Well done Alex. What's the expression? What goes around, comes around?  :)
