Title: Brother Claude Ely
Post by: lindy on May 20, 2011, 11:07:04 AM

Ely was the creator of the song "Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down."

Here's a link to a nice npr piece on Ely, lots of elements of country blues / gospel / early rockabilly in his playing and singing:

(Forgive me if this has already been covered, I've been away from Weenie for a while, and a forum search only pointed to a thread from 2004. Let me know and I'll delete if it's already been discussed.)

Bozie Sturdivant recorded a version of that song in 1942. If Ely supposedly wrote it but didn't record it until 1953, how on earth did Sturdivant know about it? They weren't exactly geographic neighbors.

White's been stealing from Blacks since they first met.  Here is a book and CD on Brother Claude Ely if you like that kind of thing:  Dust-to -Digital is a great outfit, support them and get straight from them or go through Weenie portal to Amazon.

Well, obviously it's real unlikely that Ely got the song from Sturdivant, either. I assume the song had just been 'around' for decades in the (probably black) gospel tradition, and Ely was merely the first person to think of copyrighting it. Wouldn't be the first time something like that had happened.
