Not so sure about Sylvester Weaver not playing lap style. Soft Steel Piston and Guitar Rag for instance.

Good! I spent some time consulting my usual suspects about Weaver because I wasn't 100% sure. I don't have the ears to be able to tell the difference by sound alone, and all the covers of Steel Guitar Rag I've ever heard have been played conventionally.
Are there aural cues to determine the difference?

I think when you hear a full bar across and it's very clean without any buzz or fret noise, that's a clue, especially on those slides from the II to the V in both those tunes. Plus in Guitar Rag that slide on the bass string at the end of the phrases is a bit more natural with a bar, coupled with the fact that he doesn't play any bass notes during what should be a IV chord on the 3-2-0 run on the first string. And no notes played without the slide in general. I could be wrong of course but they have that flavor to me.
