Mitchell's Christian Singers Historical Marker
« on: June 17, 2023, 09:21:26 PM »
I attended the dedication ceremony for a new historical marker to commemorate the achievements of Michell's Christian Singers of Kinston, N.C. on 06/17/2023. The group recorded over 80 sides during the late 1930s and were managed by JB Long who later helped arrange recording dates for bluesmen Blind Boy Fuller, Gary Davis and Sonny Terry. In 1939 Mitchell's Christian Singers were invited by John Hammond Sr. to participate in the Spirituals To Swing concert held at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This dedication all these years later seems to be a worthwhile project and a meaningful event that I am happy to have been able to attend. In the photo I am joined at the marker with surviving relatives of the group along with folklorist Sara Bryant who brought along several original Mitchell's Christian Singers 78 recordings.
