Jimmy Lee Williams Lyrics
« on: May 21, 2012, 03:02:36 PM »
Hi all,
Jimmy Lee Williams was discovered and recorded by George Mitchell down in Porlan, Georgia in the 1970s and early '80s.  Jimmy Lee ended up having a wonderful disc put out on Fat Possum, "Hoot Your Belly", Fat Possum Records FP1009-2.  "Have You Ever Seen Peaches" is one of the strongest songs and performances on that disc.  For the song, Jimmy Lee accompanied himself out of Vestapol, using a slide for his solos, and humming in harmony with the slid notes, something he really liked to do.  Coming out of each solo, he gives a spoken, "Yeah", more or less simultaneous with breaking time.  This is one of my very favorite performances ever in Vestapol tuning, and everything Jimmy Lee recorded is worth seeking out.  Here is "Have You Ever Seen Peaches?":

Have you ever seen peaches grow on a sweet potato vine?
Have you ever seen peaches grow on a sweet potato vine?
Well, wake up, woman, take your leg off of mine

Well, I'm goin' up the country, baby, don't you want to go?
Well, I'm goin' u' the country, baby, don't you want to go?
When I leave here, baby, I ain't comin' back no more

SOLO (Humming during solo, followed by spoken "Yeah")

Well, I love the woman, I just can't call her name
Well, I love that woman, but I just can't call her name
But it's a married woman, but I love her just the same

Well, I'm goin', baby, cryin' won't make me stay
Yes, I'm goin', baby, cryin' won't make me stay
Well, the more you cry, the further you gonna drive me away

SOLO (Humming during solo, followed by spoken "Yeah")

Well, you see here, woman, see what you done done
Well, you see here, woman, see what you done done
Well you caused me to love you and now your man done come

Well, I'm goin' up the country, baby, don't you want to go?
Yes, I'm goin' up the country, baby, don't you want to go?
When I leave here, baby, I ain't comin' back no more

SOLO (Humming during solo, followed by spoken "Yeah")

Well, I give you my money, all my lovin', too
Well, I give you my money, all my lovin', too
Well, tell me, baby, what more can I do?

All best,
Johnm
