It's a good one, for sure. Highly recommended, as long as you like chickens.

Hi all,
I think Old Hat does a wonderful job with their re-issue series, but feel like this particular one is cutting a mighty narrow swath.
All best,

Review of this in the latest Old-Time Herald by our own Lyle Lofgren. "If you can only buy one chicken record, this is it."  :P

What's wrong with Gene Autry, Lyle?  :D

Can't argue with Lyle's comment. The same could be said for their barbecue disc, too!

I don't think his delivery is up to the (admittedly high, for a chicken record) standards set by, for example, the Louisville Jug Band, Grayson & Whitter, or The Leake County Revelers. I even regard him as weak compared with other Jimmie Rodgers imitators, none of whom get close to the original. And the attempts at sound effects are particularly feeble. Other than that, I have no objections, and I'm glad Old Hat included the cut, because otherwise I'd have never heard it.

And, certainly, this is better than the songs he sang as a movie cowboy, which gave him enough wealth to buy a baseball team. As a result, a business associate once took me to a game when I was in Los Angeles, and pointed out that Doris Day was sitting in the front row along the first base side -- he even had binoculars so I could verify that it was her and not some other blonde. So nothing is all bad, which is why I wrote "...with the possible exception of Gene Autry, there's nothing here that offends my sensibilities." Note the inclusion of "possible."

Fair comment, and I agree about the sound effects. Autry did do rather better than your average 78 artist, didn't he...
