Major Taylor would still be an anomaly even now. I've been involved in all facets of bicycle racing for almost 30 years and I've only known maybe 6 or 7 African American bicycle racers in all that time. Only one- Nelson Vails, becoming another national champion in the 1980's.
Major Taylor's accomplishments are even more extraordinary considering how much he had to overcome to be a champion.
Got the name, still workin' on the licks!
