Just because those words were the ones that got to be on the record don't mean that it was the only ones that could fit there. We changed them songs around all the time. It don't matter what you want me to listen to right now. I probably never done it again that way anyhow! - Son House, responding when asked to decipher some lyrics from one of his records. Garbage man blues

”I was down in the alley….”
That’ the first words in ”Garbage man blues”, perforned by Will Hatcher, on mandolin. It’s a very beautyful tune, but the lyrics are very hard, yes, inpossible to hear. So I wonder; is there anyone out there, knowing the lyrics?

Hi maturest,
This is a good story song. Here is the tune:

INTRO

I was down in the alley, I was eating from a garbage can
I was down in the alley, I was eating from a garbage can
When I looked up, sweet mama, I spied that mean old garbage man

Then the garbage man told me, "You can not eat here today."
And the garbage man told me, "You can not eat here today.
I'm gettin' my weekly salary. I must move this garbage can away."

I said, "Garbage man, please have mercy on poor me."
I said, "Garbage man, please have mercy on poor me.
'Cause I ain't nothin' but a poor boy. A poor boy is all you see." (Spoken: Play it, Johnny.)

SOLO

And the garbage man told me, "I'll give you a break this time."
Then the garbage man told me, "I'll give you a break this time.
Just don't let me catch you, eating out of that can of mine."

I said, "Garbage man, thank you for this break today."
I said, "Garbage man, thank you for this break today.
I've had my fill. You can move this garbage can away." (Spoken: That's it. Yes sir! Ha ha)

All best,
Johnm

Thank you a lot, Mr Johnm. I´ve been trying to figure out his words, (maybe my english isn´t good enough, you know, being swedish and all) but it stopped in the  first line, just came to
"I was down in the alley.....", so I´m very grateful. So, thanks again.
