Couple of suggestions on the Walter Roland:

2.2 HEARD (pronounced heared) somebody

3.1 I don't want to woman GOT face like a natural man
3.2 She walk INTO your house IT'LL be Ďstruction in the land says

And the avenue sounds more like "Ellen" to me, which I don't think is right, but maybe someone familiar with Birmingham might have an idea.

Thanks Chris. Listening again this is how I hear the 3rd verse. I think he sneaks in the "well' at the beginning real quick.

Well I don't no want no woman got face like a natural man
She walk into your house and it'll be Ďstruction in the land says

I hear Adams avenue.

Cool, I wasn't on headphones so the Adams may just have sounded weird without them.

Back To The Woods Blues

Charlie Spand Ė Vocals, Piano
Josh White Ė Guitar

Richmond, Indiana
August 17, 1929

Piano in Bb

I woke up this morniní clock was striking four
Honey I woke up this morniní the clock was striking four
And my baby told me pack your things and go

I'm goní pack my suitcase and move back to the woods
I'm goní pack my suitcase and move back to the woods
It's nobody here that means me any good

Just sure as the good Lord sits in his heaven above
Now just sure as the good Lord sits in his heaven above
Now your life ain't all pleasure Ďless you with that one you love

I'm going to the river sit flat on the ground
I'm going to the river sit flat on the ground
Now if my heart strikes sorrow the tears come rolliní down

Now she's little and she's low right down on the ground
Now she's little and she's low right down on the ground
Now this the reason I love her she ain't no hand me down

Mmm ain't goní sing no more
Mmm ain't goní sing no more
Lord my train is waiting baby and I got to go

Hi Harry,
Thanks for the transcription. I merged your new thread with a pre-existing thread that had a Charlie Spand transcription in it. I'm really glad you did another of his--I think he's really under-rated, both as a player and singer, and that Yazoo re-issue of his songs is a great CD. Nice to get more piano players featured!
All best,
Johnm

Hi Harry,
I think that definitely is Josh White on guitar, playing in A position in standard tuning, all those triplets in the treble with that "poppy" touch. And I think in 4.1 and 4.2 it is:

I'm going to the river, sit FLAT on the ground

All best,
Johnm

Good Gal

Charlie Spand Ė Vocals, Piano
Josh White Ė Guitar

Richmond, Indiana
August 17, 1929

Piano in Eb

You wonder why I treat you so
You should have sense enough to know
My good gal good gal I donít love you no more
Now good gal good gal I donít love you no more

You may say that I'm changing fast
But good things in life don't never last
Good gal good gal I donít love you no more
Itís good gal good gal I donít love you no more

You used to treat me like a dog
But now I learned to hop from broad to broad
Now itís good gal I donít love you no more
Itís good gal good gal I donít love you no more

Onced I couldn't stand to see you cry
But it'd be all the same mama if you die
Now good gal good gal I donít love you no more
Good gal good gal I donít love you no more

I might as well to tell you the facts
I got a new gal she's tight like that
Good gal I donít love you no more
Itís good gal good gal I donít love you no more

Harry, one small suggestion in 4.2:
But IT'D BE all the same...

This is such a great number.

Charlie Spand Ė Vocals, Piano
Josh White Ė Guitar

Richmond, Indiana
August 17, 1929

Piano in F

INTRO PIANO/GUITAR SOLO

I let you burn my biscuits, and fill my coffee full of sand
I let you burn my biscuits, and fill my coffee full of sand
And, now you take my money, and give it to another man

I let you run around, and stay up all night to dance
I let you run around, and stay up all night to dance
Now, youíre tryiní to act like, mama, you wanna wear the pants

You went down to Memphis, found a butter-and-egg man there
You went down to Memphis, found a butter-and-egg man there
And, now youíre tryiní to give, your regular man the air

PIANO/GUITAR SOLO 2x

I used to sleep on clean sheets, but I donít do that no more
I used to sleep on clean sheets, but I donít do that no more
Lord, I canít go in your bedroom, you make me sleep on the floor

You treat me lowdown and dirty, baby, that is the fact
Lord, you treat me lowdown and dirty, baby, that is the fact
And, now youíre tryiní to quit me, and I ainít gonna stand for that

Thanks for posting that song, Harry. I sure like Charlie Spand's singing, and Josh White demonstrates his comfort and wealth of ideas playing in Vestapol.
All best,
Johnm
