"Shake That Thing" done in MJH style.
« on: December 15, 2014, 05:26:39 AM »
Hi, I've just recorded Shake That Thing. I played it live into my recorder using 2 mics, one for vocals and the other for guitar (singing and playing at the same time), and then transferred it onto my computer. I tried to do it in the style of Mississippi John Hurt. It's a rather rough version, but that's probably a good thing with MJH stuff, because a lot of John's recordings are warts and all recordings. I think that kinda adds to the appeal and character of his music. Anyway, I rarely get much feedback on my playing/singing so I'm not sure if this is reasonably close to John's approach. I can only try I guess. I also added a little section where I play high up the neck. I think it sounds best through headphones. Thanks.

Here goes my version of Shake That Thing, version inspired by Fred Sanford!

That was very easy to listen to, smooth and slick.  I liked those soft vocals as well. Often when people start to sing I think "maybe they should just stick to guitar pickin' ", but your vocals sounded quite good and merged very well with that lovely finger pickin'. I could sure see a lot of John Hurt in your playing. I can play similar tunes but it doesn't sound half as good as you, what's the secret?

Edit ..  you're right about headphones. I just listened to the tune again using headphones this time, turned the volume up and it sounds REALLY good that way.

The replies on the post set a high standard - a standard that was most definitely met! I agree, very MJH, the smooth soft voice is also reminiscent as well. Very well done!
Confident that I'm probably almost definitely the youngest record label owner in my street
