..been learning this over the past year .. the foundation for this song was in place after learning Broke Down Engine, so just figured out odds and ends by ear. Listening to myself play it, I hear that I get off time at a few spots..need to go back to the drawing board .. Tom

Hi Tom - nice job. I'd just been listening to McTell's recording repeatedly, in part because it uses that, um, controversial formula that occurs in Down the Dirt Road Blues ("my good gal got a mojo, she's tryin' to keep it hid"). In part because I've been playing around with the tune myself for the past two years or so. I'm probably in the minority, but I actually think it's a better song than Broke Down Engine in terms of performance. Maybe the lyrics for BDE are more "classic", but overall I like this much better. I find McTell's performance here is not as lugubrious as Broke Down Engine. My main comment on your own take, which actually derives in part from listening to myself play it, is to try and get some more of that "snap" that McTell's performance has. Dig in a bit more to that great-sounding guitar.
Cheers,
Andrew
