Singing is where the rubber really hits the road. How invested are you? What do you have to bring to the song? How much are you capable of letting yourself feel? How much of that are you willing to show? Are you willing to step out of your set identity to engage a song? Unless singing is embarrassing, it ain't no damn good at all - Mr. O'Muck
Hi all, I guess I'm out of order, but I've got one from Volume 3. Buddy Moss recorded "Gravy Server" at a session in New York City on August 21, 1935, backing himself out of A position in standard tuning. After a brief intro, he opens the song on the IV chord, the only verse he chose to accompany that way. His second full solo is especially exciting.
INTRO
I've got a woman, she's sweet as she could be I've got a woman, she's sweet as she can be She's a long, tall woman, she's all right with me
Lord, I love my woman, she treats me nice and kind Lord, I love my woman, she treats me nice and kind Oh, and man, she got somethin' to ease my worried mind
I'm gonna ask my woman, will she be my wife I'm gonna ask my woman, will she be my wife I could b'lieve she could boil water, make it suit my appetite
SOLO
Say, the way she fries my steak, peoples, I'm satisfied Say, the way she fries my steak, peoples, I'm satisfied And the way she stirs her gravy, man, you'd be surprised
SOLO
Says, she serve me in the mornin', she serve me late at night Says, she serve me in the mornin', she serve me late at night Said, and anything she serve me, she serves it to me right

Thanks DJ, that's way better than what I was hearing. I don't hear the "so" and when I listen to the same line in Take 1 it sounds like it might be a polysyllabic word "me so [flat-flat]" before the third "flat."
I'm OK with changing to what y'all hear though as I have some hearing loss and I'm listening to MP3 quality on not the best speakers in the world.
Hi Scott, Thanks for catching my typo in "Gravy Server". I look forward to hearing the one with Fred McMullen and Ruth Willis when I get down to Seattle. I will make the fix. All best, Johnm

in Take 1 it sounds like it might be a polysyllabic word "me so [flat-flat]" before the third "flat."
I think in take 1 Moss sings "And I get down in a snake like it's flat flat flat, step light 'cross your floor". It sounds like he garbled the words a bit there.

I have some hearing loss...
Don't we all! Well, all of us old guys. 60 years of farm equipment (in my younger days), power tools, and loud music have done a number on my ears. If I could live my life again, the one thing I'd do differently would be diligent use of hearing protection.
Thanks DJ - in Take 1 my ears / brain seem to be implying something like: "And I get down in the snake like its tappin' flat, step light cross your floor" but I'm probably just having auditory hallucinations at this point...
Re: the ears, I'm pretty impresssed with the stuff you and others have been able to decipher in many of the recordings transcribed here on WC...maybe you and some others were half-bat to start with :-) Thanks again, Scott.
Thanks Gumbo - I haven't looked at the McTell thread before but I'll take a look as I'm dying to know what this phrase is. Thanks for the clue :-) Scott
Scott - it starts on page one and weaves in and out of the first 6-8 pages! not sure if there was a final consensus but there is comparison to Buddy Moss' versions of Broke Down Engine
