One Fourth of July, they were having a festival in downtown Memphis, with five or six stages and Charlie (Feathers) was playing on the rockabilly stage. I'm sitting there watching him and I turn around and there's this guy sitting behind me, all dressed up, smoking a cigar. Do you know who it was? It was Roosevelt Sykes, the Honeydripper! Just sittin' there, diggin' Charlie! - Kim Wood

Mooch Richardson-"Helena Blues"
« on: June 22, 2014, 04:10:53 PM »
Hi all,
Mooch Richardson recorded "Helena Blues" backed by Lonnie Johnson.  It was the kind of musical setting in which I most prefer to hear Lonnie Johnson's playing--backing a singer who was much more "country" than Lonnie was.  Lonnie did such beautiful work backing singers like Texas Alexander and Mooch Richardson.  I'm missing a word in the tagline of the third verse and would very much appreciate some help with it.  I'm attaching a video of the performance.

Mmmm, mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm
Mmmm, mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm
Mmmm, mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm (Spoken: Where you goin' now?)

Lord, you catch me stealin', please don't you tell on me
If you catch me stealin', please don't you tell on me
Lord, disease in my family, I just can't let that be

Well, I'm gon' do something for you women, Good Lord have never done
Well, I'm gon' do something for you women, Good Lord haven't never done
Well, I'm gonna buy some false hair, Good Lord didn't give these women none

Possum's rootin' in my 'tatoes, coon out in my corn
Possum's rootin' in my 'tatoes, coon out in my corn
Rabbit in my garden, won't let my turnip greens alone

Pull off them shoes I bought you, put your feet down on the ground
Pull off them shoes I bought you, put your feet down on the ground
But I wouldn't tell you so, but you tryin' to put me down

Pull off that hair I bought you, let your head go bald
Pull off that hair I bought you, let your head go bald
I wouldn't tell you so, but you came to my downfall

Edited 6/22 to pick up correction from banjochris

All best,
Johnm

Sounds like "false hair" to me, John.

Thanks very much for the help, Chris.  It sounds like "false hair" to me too, now that you mention it.  I've made the change.  How about Lonnie's tone--whew!
All best,
Johnm
