Title: Blues and Gospel Records : 1890-1943 (Blues and Gospel Records)
Post by: SpikeDriver on March 12, 2006, 06:53:39 PM
I wonder if anyone can comment on Dixon & Godrich. It looks like 9 years since the last edition. Will there be another. Also, how did they get all the info for the first edition? Definitely a giant accomplishment. Their slim "Recording the Blues" book is still one of my favorites, and can easily be reread a few times.

I thought I remembered word last year of a reprint, unrevised, of B&GR coming from Oxford (or Routledge?) but I haven't seen anything yet. Anyone else know?

You are quite correct. It had been out of print for about four years when OUP New York snuck out a limited reprint last year without informing the compilers or the book trade. Considering it was OUP Oxford who originally published it whilst NY were skeptical of a marketplace for it, somebody across the pond must have had to eat humble pie. Brits who buy the reprint are effectively buying it from New York!

The first edition was published 1964, 2nd 1969, 3rd 1982 and 4th 1997 so at that rate of escalation I'm not holding my breath for an updated version in my life time. ;D

Regarding how they gathered the information together for that very first edition, I though that was briefly outlined in the "history" part of Howard Rye's introduction to the volume. But I may be confusing it with something else.

As to "Recording The Blues" it is reprinted in "Yonder Comes The Blues" (Cambridge UP, 2001) with a very useful and enlightening commentary upon it by Howard Rye. The book also reprints two other Studio Vista paperbacks - Blacks, Whites & Blues and Savannah Syncopators

Reviving this old thread as I have a question. What are the differences between the 4th and 3rd edition of Blues and Gospel Records? And does anyone know whether the 4th edition is in fact available? Amazon.com has it listed as a 4 to 6 weeks delivery item, but I suspect an order would go unfilled.

Apart from taking the date parameter back to 1890 from 1902 (and updating the damned thing!), the major changes are two very useful indices - title and accompanist - and thanks to the Document project the former is virtually accurate. If songs of the same title are different they are listed separately having been determined by the listening process. ;D

If it were me I'd order it. Should it arrive and you decide it's not your cup of meat there's a markeplace for it in the UK...

Nauck's has some copies for sale at 137.00. The Fourth edition is way better then the 3rd edition. It is worth every penny.

I'll second BH's suggestion. It's possible that Amazon's suppliers differ from Nauck's. It's worth a shot.

Hi Bobo:

I was just making a suggestion in the event that there may still be a few unsold copies in the pipeline somewhere--not questioning your knowledge. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks all for the helpful suggestions. I have heard back from an Oxford UP US customer service rep. I had asked whether, despite the fact that the book is out of print, there was any stock left that might be lingering at Oxford UP somewhere, that I knew a limited reprint had been done a couple years ago etc. This was at the suggestion of one of the author-editors and I specified this as well in my inquiry. Alas, the answer is that they have no stock.

Will just have to keep my eyes peeled...

Yes and still running. Aptly titled "I Believe I'll Make A Change". Leroy Carr, Harlem Hamfats, Sparks Bros, Washboard Sam, Casey Weldon, Josh White, take your pick. :)

Well, after trying every once in awhile through Amazon marketplace to get this book to no avail despite it being listed, a copy recently showed up on Amazon itself as "Only 1 Left In Stock". I ordered immediately thinking, yeah right, I'll believe it when I see it. To my surprise, I soon received a "your order has shipped" message and the mailman just delivered it today. They even sent the correct edition. So it indeed turns out that Amazon will occasionally find a copy of this and put it up for sale. Thanks to all Weenies for their help with previous searches.

OK, I NEED this thing.
Amazon.com has it listed for $120 which is almost doable for me . . . I just won't eat so much this month. Andrew . . . as a Canadian can I order from Amazon.com or do I have to go through Amazon.ca where there are several copies available but at higher prices?
Does anyone know of a new or good-condition used copy of the 4th edition a fella could pick up?

You can order through the U.S. amazon.com no problem. And fortunately the exchange on the dollar is essentially par now (less fortunate for our friends to the south). The only real difference is that you don't get the free shipping deal that you would through amazon.ca. But shipping is quite low as I recall.

A thought about books vs. food. It should be said that this is a big thick book of lists. I refer to it frequently and am very glad I ordered it, wouldn't have it any other way, but it's still a big thick book of lists with no nutritional value. ;D

One thing I did find when ordering was that I was unable to order B&GR through Amazon MarketPlace (the secondary, used sellers and associated sellers you can buy from through Amazon). I have before so am not sure what the problem was. Perhaps the price or the particular sellers (more than one) didn't ship outside the US or something.

Thanks Andrew . . . this book has become rather essential for me. I've amassed quite a collection of mp3s & liner-noteless cds (WHAT is Yazoo's Problem?!!) & I'm seriously in need of a reference for them. I've begun several obsessive lists of my own, was even about to begin a song title list of all I have & then when I read the 4th edition has a song title & artist index I think I gasped out loud: really really essential for a nerd like me.
Is there a reference volume for 'country blues' after 1943 I wonder? & is there online access to ammendations for 'Blues & Gospel'?
Thanks
p.s. . . . sorry so many questions but is there an 'Old-Time' music equivalent of 'Blues & Gospel' out there?

See Weeniepedia for the post war discography or refer the "discographies tag". However both the blues and the gospel editions stop at 1970 and singularly cost even more than B&GR. Howard Rye contributes a column in Blues & Rhythm entitled 'I Believe I'll Make A Change' to take into account errors, corrections, additions and minutiae. Back in 1997 it was a regular feature but has since become "occasional"! Nothing on-line.

That'd be cool . . . As someone who now has the darn thing I would LOVE to see a thread dedicated to ammendments that we ourselves find or that others have resource to. I've had it for only a couple days & already have a list of corrections & updates.

Well I suppose some enterprising soul could OCR all Howard Rye's I Believe I'll Make A Change amendments/additions/etc column published in Blues & Rhythm since 1997. Might save some folk from reinventing the wheel....

No need to OCR them. Just scan 'em and put 'em up as jpegs, giffs or pdfs. If we have to we can charge a buck a download or something like that to satisfy copyright holders.

I'm addicted to Amazon Kindle, it's changed my reading life for the better. I'd buy B&GR again if it were available for Kindle.

Other kindle-heads might want to go into the Amazon page (http://www.amazon.com/Blues-Gospel-Records-Robert-Dixon/dp/0198162391/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1288488623&sr=8-1) and do like I did, click on 'Tell the publisher, I want to read this on Kindle', just below the image of the book.

In the "No News" Department, I checked Kindle availability again today, there is still no electronic version of B&GR

The book is currently available and selling for US$ 170 on Amazon. I seem to recall mine costing NZ$ 45, or something like that, which seemed expensive at the time.

When I purchased mine in 1997 it cost me GBP75 which at the time didn't seem too expensive for 1,370 pages. As somebody once commented "all things are relative"!

I wonder if OUP have any plans to progressively make eBook versions of their catalog available. There are some Oxford titles already in eBook form. I think it's inevitable, if a publisher adopted that strategy nothing would ever go out of print, ever, offering potential sales until the sun goes dark.

However I must say the Kindle format's search / lookup / contents / indexes & general navigational aspects, in its current form, are not ideal for using with a reference books of lists like B&GR. The current software and hardware works fine for reading ripping yarns cover-to-cover. Much as I love B&GR it will never be a page turner. I'm totally sure the eBook software and devices will improve over time to support this type of reference work though.

A few comments on an electronic version of B&GR.  Which, by the way, I'd love to see.

Quote
..if a publisher adopted that strategy nothing would ever go out of print, ever...

Ideally, that's the case.  In reality, the experience with digital music sales indicates that publishers will, for various reasons, take electronic product in and out of print, even though it costs them nothing to keep the product available.

Technology and products are always changing.  But if you're a user who wants that sort of function, you'd be better served at the moment by the Barnes & Noble eReader software.  I've used the Nook color for a year now and have been quite satisfied with the search, highlighting, bookmarking, index/contents, etc.  (Full disclosure:  my wife works for B&N, but has nothing to do with either the Nook or their eReader software.)
