Steve Cheseborough, a nationally renowned performer of 1920s-30s-style blues, will entertain diners at this North Portland hotspot for genuine, smoky barbecue
Chef-owner James Harris opened the restaurant early this year, serving up ribs, brisket, salmon, duck, lamb and other smoked delights, accompanied by greens, red beans and rice and other downhome specialties.
?People say blues and barbecue go together, so we thought we?d try it,? Harris said.
Cheseborough sings and plays in the tradition of Memphis Minnie, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson and Bo Carter, learning songs off scratchy old 78s and bringing them to life. He has performed at the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival, the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Arkansas, and many other festivals, riverboats, clubs and events across the country. He also is author of the acclaimed guidebook Blues Traveling and a contributor to various magazines. He appeared in the Starz! TV documentary Last of the Mississippi Jukes. He moved to Portland from Clarksdale, Miss., last year.
?It?s not easy to find good barbecue in Portland, but U-licious is the real thing,? Cheseborough said. ?It?s almost like being back down in the Delta.?
U-licious is open 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Beer and wine are available. Children are welcome.
