Groucho: Are you married? Got any kids? Contestant: Why yes, I have nine children. G (after slight double-take): Nine children!? Why so many? C: Well, I like children, and I really love my wife! G: Huh? I love my cigar, but I take it out of my mouth once in a while - Groucho Marx to a contestant on his quiz show in the 1950s
I thought I would be very efficient and get a date organised for next year
However, the infamous South Lawns Hotel didn't seem that keen and have just rung me back citing that "your people bring their own drink... and go down to village for sandwiches... and that the room is free.... and we have to put staff on.... and we are so busy with wedding that so we can't do any date except February sometime..."
Well boys and girls, we all knew the writing was on the wall last year when some were given black looks for having illicit whisky bottles, perchance they also noticed something this year as well That said, I'd certainly dispute the fishpaste sandwich bit as that has never been a regular item.
Ergo, the bottom line is we need a new home.
Start looking, let me have any polite suggestions and I'll sound out the hotel in question. I think my only real stipulation is it has to be on a line south of Cheltenham and preferably in easy reach of a motorway.
Cheeky sods. If it didn't take ten minutes or more to find someone to serve at the bar, people may have used it more. And you were made to fell like you were being a nuisance when you asked! And I'm not aware of them doing anything much for lunch.
I'll have a think.

Planes aren't great for transporting collections of antique guitars though...
I had a look at the possibility of some sort of grouped holiday cottages- but the problem is likely to be that they tend to rent our for fixed periods- four nights or whatever and are usually based on double occupancy. Not completely impossible, but likely to be tought to find something that really suits.
Personally, I'm quite drawn to the idea of somewhere self catering - such that we have the freedom to go out en masse for a meal, as well as to choose our own liquid supplies for the evening, but it may be more hassle than its worth.

You may have a rival / assistant... I can certainly knock up a good batch of base sauce before I come!
Was thinknig of this sort of thing. The one in question might be a bit expensive, and much depends on potential numbers etc But if you get a place that has ten rooms, for under a grand a night, off season, ther emight be a deal to be done that works out at a similar or lower rate to the South Lawns, per person- and BYO drinks etc.
In fact, looking at that site- there may well be quite a few venues with potential. Some even with swimming pools. We'd need an earlyish idea of numbers but the benefits of having a property to ourselves are pretty clear- and presumably get over the reluctance of hotels to have music being played etc as well.
How much was the South Lawns Richard? And approximately how many did we have? (I'm thinking it was about 10 players).
