Cool John Hurt/Skip James pics
« on: August 05, 2005, 12:13:05 AM »
Hey all--

I work at a newspaper and was browsing through some of our photo wire services and came across some neat color pics of John Hurt and Skip James together in Washington Square Park in 1965 or so. You can't download them 'cause it would cost you about $150 a pop. But you can look at them onscreen.

Go to www.gettyimages.com, go to editorial, then archival, and search for john hurt. scroll past the actor and you'll see 'em. Enjoy.
Chris

Here are a couple more pics of our heroes, taken by Dick Waterman. The 2nd pic also has Son House:

Thanks, Chris.  It's good to see them in a an open-air context.  I'll bet there are a few more pix of them out there, just waiting to be uploaded.

And it's great to see that Skip James enjoyed comfortable footwear!

Cheers,
Jed

Great pictures, but that is definitely NOT Washington Square Park, in NY City; it is not even New York City.  I played guitar  in Washington Square Park, on Sunday afternoons, back in the early middle sixties, and it looked a lot different.  There is a big, curcular fountain, in the middle of the park, where we clustered in small groups, standing or sitting on the edge of the fountain, and there is a grand, triumphal arch nearby, like the one in Paris.  Except for the fountain and arch area, the park does not have such open spaces.  The trees are many and big and there is lots of shrubbery.

I think that park is probably in Washington DC.
