I couldn't get it to load.  Anyway, I thought I'd make sure folks are aware of a great resource for clips of the old time greats.  Stefan Grossman's site has, among many other great items, many videos of the old time greats.  Link here, if I've done this right:  http://guitarvideos.com/dvd/00dvd.htm

If this is the video I'm thinking of, it's on the first DVD listed:  "Legends of Bottleneck Blues Guitar"

hi. here is some trivia for you all. if you have seen the footage of son sitting on a dock of some sort, when they first zoom in you can see a back view of another guitar player. That is philladelphia jerry ricks. if you listen closely you can hear him playing in the background. he is a great player and is still out there touring. here is a link with more about his music. see ya. roscoe.

Hey, roscoe.

Jerry has taught at Port Townsend several times, so, those of us who attend are very familiar with him. If you keep your eye on the quote box at the top of every page you'll see a few gems from Jerry. Great player.

All for now.

There is some cool footage of Whistler's Jug Band playing Tear It Down at the same site.

I'd seen this footage somewhere, the Blues TV series or something.

Did they record this on 78? I know it by King David's Jug Band. Anyway, check it out, it's great.

(Thanks to bighollowtwang who posted this over at IGS)

That's from Movietone footage shot in Louisville, Kentucky 1930 of which that is just one of four 'stills' which are reproduced in a 1976 book entitled 'Movietone Presents The 20th Century'. In the other three they are seen performing in different settings.

Even this footage looks like it's from at least two takes. There are several moments where the jug players are suddenly all lined up together, having been seconds earlier spread out on the makeshift stage.

Good close-ups of the jug-playing for aspiring jug players, BTW.

Did a little googling and found a way to download these videos.  Go to: http://www.joshkinberg.com/blog/archives/2005/11/greased_google.php

You'll need to be running firefox and install the greasemonkey extension.  It's all described on the site.

The Whistler's Jug Band footage appears on the Times Ain't Like They Used To Be DVD (Yazoo 512), which is worth owning just for the Cumberland Ridge Runners performance of Goofus. The 78 recording itself can be found on Clifford Hayes & The Louisville Jug Bands Vol.4 1929-31 (Document JPCD-1504-2).
