SOTM November 2019: Goin' Down Slow
« on: November 10, 2019, 09:51:36 AM »
Hi all,
It seemed a shame not to have a Song of the Month this month, and I had been wracking my brain for a "Blues Standard", one that had been played and recorded by a host of players, like "Louise" or "Prison Bound".  "Goin' Down Slow" certainly falls into that category.  The original version was recorded in 1941 by St. Louis Jimmy Oden, with accompaniment by Roosevelt Sykes.  Here is that original version:

Since that initial recording, "Goin' Down Slow" has been played and recorded by a Who's Who of blues musicians.  I'll just post a few versions here and let the rest of you scout out some more versions.  Here is a live version from Mance Lipscomb:

Here's a version by one of my favorite singers, Alec Seward, recorded at a party, with Sonny Terry along for the ride:

Here's Ralph Willis with "New Goin' Down Slow":

Here's Dr. Ross doing it in Spanish tuning:

Any other favorite versions of "Goin' Down Slow" out there?

All best,
Johnm

Hard to choose, there are a lot of good versions!  Here's Ray Charles:

Little Walter's oddly upbeat rendition (under the title "I Had My Fun") is the first one I ever heard.

Hell, without a Song of the Month we might as well not have the month--we'll just go straight from October to December. But since John mercifully stepped in to save 30 days from disappearing from my pathetic existence, I might as well make a contribution:

Great choice. So many versions that are new to me. Here’s the version I first heard many years ago:

There's are so many versions of this on YouTube that if I keep scrolling, I'll probably find a cover by Dean Martin.  Anyway, this Daddy Stovepipe fellow is pretty good:

Hi all,
Here's a version by J. B. Hutto.  I've always admired his screamy vocals.

All best,

Hi all,
Like Little Walter, Pink Anderson recorded "Goin' Down Slow" as "I Had My Fun".  Here it is:
