THE book. A discography of all known blues and gospel recordings from the covered period. Organized by artist, with all known details of each recording: place, date, personnel, matrix number, issuing company, and issue number. Plus explanatory footnotes as needed.

Pros: Besides the discography, the book includes essays on the major labels covered, dates of field recording trips by those labels as well as the artists recorded on those trips, electrical transcriptions, and Library of Congress recordings. The discographical entries are alphabetical by aritst, but there are additional indexes by title, vocalist, and accompanist. If you've ever been awakened in the middle of the night by nagging questions about which Charley Patton titles were never issued or what singers Sammy Price accompanied, you need this book.

Cons: Expensive. With a publication date of 1997, the book could soon use a new addition.
