This article is primarily concerned with informal home made string bass instruments used in early recording sessions. The article does not cover, except in passing, the manufactured string bass (double bass), or wind instruments such as the jug.

Primary source for the session data is [[Dixon, Robert M. W., Godrich, John, and Rye, Howard: Blues And Gospel Records 1890 - 1943, Fourth Edition|Blues And Gospel Records 1890 - 1943, Fourth Edition]]. When the instruments appear in sessions they are abbreviated in that book as, variously, 'imb' (imitation bass), ----- tbc
