Nickel 12-string sets
« on: February 22, 2012, 11:02:11 AM »
Suitable for your long-scale Stella or Stella-inspired 12-string:

course 1: .011/.011
course 2: .015/.015
course 3: .024w/.024w
course 4: .014/.036
course 5: .022p/.046
course 6: .028/.059

the gauges are scientifically calculated to split the difference between the ropes that were found on Leadbelly's guitar and the lighter string you'd need to bring out the "slink" in McTell's sound...

I've just got a few sets - $16 shipped and paypalled in the US...  $17 outside the US....  more than one set? let's talk. PM me for questions/orders.

Recently received my set and put them on the Angelina. Really nice sound and touch. Highly recommended.

Frankie or Blueshome, at what pitch do you tune your guitar with these gauges ?

I'm using Todd Cambio's sets of LaBella, (13-65) two tones lower than standard (down to C in standard or Bb in open tuning) on a Leadbelly copy (made by R.Bown) and your sets looks pretty light.

Also, could you please explain the specificity of nickel strings ?
Thanks,
Nicolas

I normally tune to B in standard and Bb for Vastapol - same with the heavy La Bellas which I've used up to now.

I was surprised that the lighter strings worked so well, I'd be happy to stick with these.

To me nickel sounds a little less brash than PB, is easier to fret (don't know why), but this also applies to the nickels I use on my triplate, and they last must longer before the they sound tired.

B for std, A for vestapol, D for spanish.

the lighter gauges work well for me at those pitches.

After two and a half years...  I figured it was about time to change the strings on my Angelina. :)  I hope I don't have to do that again for another two and a half years...
I just changed the bottom three courses and added one wound 3rd string (leaving an unwound octave 3rd).  The combination of the lighter nickel in the bass and the heavier 1st and 2nd courses is working fine for me for now.  I'll get around to swapping those courses out eventually, but I don't think I wanna part with the octave 3rd.
I mostly play slide on my 12 string and I tend to tune to C Vastapol and F Spanish.
The nickel sounds and plays great!  Thanks, Frankie!

I like to change strings about as often as Mike.  :P  One thing I've found is not only do I like the nickel strings on the 12, but unscientific results suggests the nickel also lasts longer for me than phosphor bronze etc.

Railroad Bill

Here they are in action...  Well, actually I still haven't changed the first two courses and I managed to break the original 7th string already...  But you get the idea.   ;)
My guitar seems happier tuned up to Vastapol @ C# with these strings.

Nice to see a new vid from you, I've missed 'em.

Hey Mike, whose variation of the song is this?
I haven't been able to find those lyrics.
I'm stuck on the last verse...

Railroad Bill taking his rest
Forty-one ------ lying dead in his chest?
Yes, I killed old Railroad Bill.

Well done, Mike!

Here's a link to the song on Ramblin' Jack's site:

You can take a listen over on the left in the "Music Player" box. I don't know if it's the entire song as there's fadeout at the end.
