Country Blues > Port Townsend Country Blues Workshop

Another first timer

(1/1)

WayneS:
My wife and I've decided that the Port Townsend workshops will be our annual vacation this year, and I'd appreciate some information.

First, the biggie, on lodgings:  I'll be attending workshops (and concerts) each day, but wife won't; she'll want to attend some or all of the concerts, but will be a Port Townsend/Seattle tourist for much of the time.  So I don't know what the best idea for lodgings would be.  Right now the dorm rooms certainly look like a great option, but if my wife should prefer that we stay in town, could anyone offer nominations for a reasonable place to stay?  (If there's a good deal somewhere I'd be able to buy Granny her new wheelchair this year.)  The dorm rooms do sound good, and are certainly reasonable.

Another:  What kind of transportation might there be from the Workshop campus into town, and back?

A minor thing:  Are there onsite facilities for doing laundry, or do you trek into town?

Concert packages.  What's the difference between the allfest package and the mainstage package?  Can't tell which of the concerts listed on the Centrum website would be included in the two packages. Are there concerts/performances other than listed on the Centrum website?

How many people usually attend?

I'll be bringing a guitar, lots of picks and strings, a Zoom H2 recorder, enough clothing to stock the local Salvation Army, and cards with my contact information, so I can stay in touch with new friends.  Let me know if I've left anything out.  Thank you for any assistance!

Hi Wayne,

Looks like this got lost in the shuffle.

I don't know any lodgings in town to recommend though there are certainly some nice places to choose from. I suspect they would not be offering deals in the peak summer season. There is no dedicated shuttle or anything from town to the Fort that I know of. There is a public bus but I have no idea of the schedule/frequency - I suspect rare. But these are questions the folks at the Centrum office could probably answer. They're very nice and helpful whenever I've dealt with them, so give them a call. Can't hurt.

There are on-site facilities for laundry.

I imagine the allfest package includes any of the shows in the clubs during the festival. So worth the upgrade, even though some of the clubs can be hard to get into if you're not an early bird, since they're small and get packed. The club schedule is not on the website but would include faculty in various clubs, plus some extra acts. Fun stuff. This is part of your workshop registration so only necessary for non-workshop folks.

Bring some earplugs if you're a light sleeper. You made need 'em (or not).

You'll have a great time!

WayneS:
Uncle Bud and Waxwing, thanks very much to both of you.  It's looking like the "married students housing" (makes me feel like I'm in college again) will be the way to go.  I'll phone the folk at Centrum, probably on Tuesday.

See you at the workshops!

Wayne

Janmarie:
Centrum also has a list of alternative housing that I've rented from a couple of times.  There are several places within blocks of the fort, the prices are very reasonable and I've been very happy with the accommodations. Give centrum a call and I'm sure they would be happy to send it to you if the "married students housing" doesn't work out for you.

Am not sure if anyone has mentioned this but the town is only about a 30 minute walk from the fort and the charm of the town is one of the reasons I return to this workshop year after year.

Good luck and see you in August!

Jan Marie

Hi,

I know that this advice was posted to another first timer, but in case you missed it, it can be COLD in Port Townsend in August.  One morning I saw a dog walker wearing a woolen hat and mittens early in the morning.  Have some warm layers, and have fun.
