Country Blues > Port Townsend Country Blues Workshop
any advice for a first-timer at Port Townsend?
MotMot:
I'm comigg out of long-time lurk status because it looks very much like I can finally make it out to the blues week this August. I am very excited.
I'll be flying with wife and kids from Asheville, NC, and they'll go off to visit friends in Seattle while I spend the week learning/making music. Still have to confirm available leave time, and start working on details such as transportation, flying with instruments, etc., but I expect to plop down the non-refundable deposit on Monday or so.
Any advice for a first-timer?
Best,
Motmot (Tom)

Hi Tom,
That's great that you can make it this year. I would recommend bringing a small portable recording device of some type to record classes. Many teachers employ no printed materials at all and a sound version can be very helpful in reconstructing what was gone over in class. If you can show up reasonably well-rested and with hands in good shape, you'll be able to play more while you're there. Bring some kind of heavy sweater or windbreaker (possibly water-shedding), because sometimes it can be right cool that near the Sound that time of year. Good shoes for walking are important, too. Fort Worden is a very large site and you'll be getting just about everywhere on foot. I hope you end up being able to make it and have a great time.
All best,
Johnm

Hi Tom - good news that you think you'll make it to PT. John's already given some essential advice, and I'd just reiterate the need for a varied wardrobe, and since you're coming from more southerly climes, warm clothing. It can be shorts and t-shirt weather or fleece and sweaters weather. Usually pretty cool at night.
If you're staying in the dorms you'll need to decide between a quiet dorm (no music at night) and a dorm that allows jamming (till all hours). There are places to play other than the dorms. It's a good idea to bring some earplugs, just in case.
There is a music store nearby for some supplies, but probably better bring everything you need.

You'll have a ball! Definitely bring clothing for cold weather - wool sweater and sox, etc. A poncho or something in case it rains can be a good idea too. It can be quite chilly and damp at night, and you will be walking around outside between jam sessions and parties. Comfortable walking shoes are also a really good idea. If you bring a recording device, be sure to bring plenty of media -- I guess that means those tiny little memory cards now -- and batteries too.
I'm sure it's a good idea to record your classes, but don't stress about that because it's even more important to be present during the classes.
An electronic clip on tuner is a really good tool to have.
See you there,
Suzy
P.S. I will be teaching blues fiddle at Swannanoa fiddle week in Asheville, first week of July, maybe see you there???

I agree with everyones suggestions but be careful this can be a life changing week! You may want to come every year. Yes it can be cold and windy and wet, but it can also be hot so don't forget your shorts and sandles. If you have not been in the area you will probably want to skip a class or two and hike the forest and beach, maybe even explore the town. All worth seeing, the best vacation I can imagine.
