Gerry Clarke:
Tom Carmody, who made Irish records for Columbia on the 33xxx series in the mid '30s with fiddle, banjo, piano and accordion confirmed that there was only one mic., but said that there were three cutters.  Two of these produced what he called "soft records", which could be played back to the musicians after the recording.  The Columbia studio was on the 16th floor to avoid traffic noise from Columbus Circle etc.  The 33xxx Irish series parallels the 14xxx Race record series.

at 3:15, isn't that Stuff Smith and Jonah Jones (the vocalist for Smith's hits "You'se a Viper" and "After You've Gone") on trumpet?
Also looks like Cozy Cole on drums, but ???guitar and bass??
