Title: "Rag Blues in C" and "Blind Blake's Rag" tab?
Post by: si on July 05, 2005, 04:49:56 PM
Recently heard these 2 tunes for first time, they are magical.
Anyone know if there is any free tablature available for them?
1. "Rag Blues in C" by Rev Gary Davis.
2. "Blind Blake's Rag" by John Jackson (there are about 3 different tunes with this name, it is only the John Jackson one I am looking for, not the others).

There is a transcription of "Blind Blakes Rag" (plus a whole lot more) on John J's Mel Bay book:

That Mel Bay book looks great, thanks for suggesting it. Arhoolie (and everywhere else I've found so far) all say it's out of print. Anyone have this book for sale or know where I can buy it? Meanwhile am going to start learning John Jackson's "Blind Blake's Rag" by ear from the Amazon sample clip.
There are 2 other tunes by this or similar name, one I learnt from tab by Joe Cainen which is great. Another was recorded by Bill Williams. Did Blind Blake himself ever play any of these 3 tunes?

Hi Si,

Glad you liked the tab by Joe Cainen - it is quite a while since I TablEdited that particular tune - I will tell Joe that it is appreciated.

Cheers and keep on pluckin'.

Yes tell Joe it is great. And thanks to you Steve for the excellent tabbing, it is great, with lots of variations. I know someone else in these parts who plays it too.

I play the 'C Rag' that Stefan Grossman captured the Rev playing, or at least I used to, must dust it off. Stefan also tabbed it out and it appeared in Guitar Player (or one of those mags) way back when. I actually copied the tab on a fax machine and will dig it out and scan it, if it hasn't faded away to white. Nice tune, very satisfying to play, groovy 'B' part.

Edit: found it, scanned it. Hope it's the same song.

Thanks Rivers that is great. It is well after midnight but cannot wait so am going to try it now real quietly so I don't wake the neighbors. By the way a great program for viewing JPG files like this is (on Microsoft Windows computers) Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com
