I thought, and still do think, that Lemon was a very good guitarist. Gary disagreed. (laughter) Gary started to play a very accurate pastiche of Lemon's Black Snake Moan, and Gary just opened his mouth and let out with this incredible blood curdling scream, and then he stops and says, "Man, he couldn't have sung no louder if someone was cutting his throat". He was merciless - Reverend Gary Davis, by Dave Van Ronk

Henry Williams & Eddie Anthony Lyrics
« Reply #15 on: October 20, 2011, 01:58:38 PM »
this is one of my favourite songs so here's what I got

"Lonesome Blues"  (Henry Williams & Eddie Anthony)

If you ever wake up lonesome, all by yourself
If you ever wake up lonesome, all by yourself
And the one you love, are lovin' someone else

I wrote this blues I'm gonna, sing them as I feel
I wrote this blues I'm gonna, sing them as I feel
and...???

"I'm tellin' you people, I don't know your name
I'm tellin' you people, I don't know your name
but...???"

(spoken part)

"aw, the ... sun is goin down?
aw, mama the ...sun is goin down?
...???  "

Thanks folks!

Great tune, how did I miss it, here's what I got, still missing some pieces.

Quote
If you ever wake up lonesome, all by yourself
If you ever wake up lonesome, all by yourself
And the one you love, are lovin' someone else

I got:
Did you ever wake up lonesome, all by yourself?
Did you ever wake up lonesome, all by yourself?
And the one you love off lovin' someone else

Quote
I wrote this blues I'm gonna, sing them as I feel
I wrote this blues I'm gonna, sing them as I feel
and...???

I wrote these blues I'm gonna sing them as I please
I wrote these blues I'm gonna sing them as I please
and [???] singin' 'em, I swear to goodness [???] no-one else [???] <--- this line is really hard to decipher

Quote
"I'm tellin' you people, I don't know your name
I'm tellin' you people, I don't know your name
but...???"

I tell you people, I don't know your name
I tell you people, I don't know your name
but takin' other men's women, I swear to God you're doin' a shame

Quote
(spoken part)
Here's a man with a dozen different feelings
Put six in one place, and half (in) the other
[???] strange things goin' on at night

Quote
"aw, the ... sun is goin down?
aw, mama the ...sun is goin down?
...???  "

aw, look where the sun goes down
aw, mama, look where the sun goes down
I haven't had no righteous mama since my baby blowed(?) this town

I'm hearing 2.3 as:
And on me daddy likin' 'em singin' 'em, I'll swear to goodness there's no one else please

Pretty sure of the end, and the sound is right for the beginning, but it doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense.

The last bit of the spoken part is:
Talkin' about takin' men's women I done took so many of them till I'm shamed, scared to go home at night

And I think "blowed" is probably right but he misspeaks a bit.

Hi all,
I think the front end of that 2.3 line is:
And old Mr. Eddie likin' 'em, singin' 'em, . . .
All best,
Johnm

Here is a version incorporating the combined ear power. It can be found on Atlanta Blues (JSP) and on Violin, Sing The Blues For Me:

Lonesome Blues Henry Williams & Eddie Anthony

Did you ever wake up lonesome, all by yourself?
Did you ever wake up lonesome, all by yourself?
And the one you love off lovin' someone else

I wrote these blues I'm gonna sing them as I please
I wrote these blues I'm gonna sing them as I please
And old Mr. Eddie likin' 'em, singin' 'em, I'll swear to goodness there's no one else please

I tell you people, I don't know your name
I tell you people, I don't know your name
but takin' other men's women, I swear to God you're doin' a shame

[spoken]
Here's a man with a dozen different feelings
Put six in one place, and half (in) the other
Talkin' about takin' men's women I done took so many of them till I'm shamed, scared to go home at night
[/spoken]

aw, look where the sun goes down
aw, mama, look where the sun goes down
I haven't had no righteous mama since my baby blow(ed) this town
